MedUni Vienna: Anna Spiegel Extension with architectural design by Delta Pods Architects

The Medical University of Vienna is currently investing over 500 million euros in comprehensive infrastructure projects.

A special part of these projects is the expansion of the existing Anna Spiegel research building (section 25.2) south of the main building (section 10) on the grounds of the AKH (University Hospital AKH Vienna).

In the future Anna Spiegel research building, interdisciplinary basic research will be conducted with the aim of integrating the latest research results directly into clinical practice. Research departments from various university hospitals will move into the new building, where modern laboratory and research facilities will be set up and directly connected to the existing research building.

The extension and conversion of the existing building – while operations continued – posed a particular challenge. Now that the façade has been completed, the ceremonial unveiling of Klimt’s work of art ‘Die Medizin’ (Medicine), which was reconstructed using artificial intelligence as part of a collaboration between the Belvedere Museum and Google Arts Culture, took place on 13 November 2024 and now adorns the façade of the research building in monumental size.

Project highlights:

  • Project duration: 12/2020 – ongoing
  • Construction costs: €24 million
  • Gross floor area: 5,900 m²
  • Service: Architectural planning
  • Use: Laboratory and research space
