BIGSEE award: Campus Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy Ried
Tobias Ziegelmeyer, Lead Architecture Wels, was honored to present his flagship project in Portorož in the “Public and Administration Buildings” category.
Thank you for organizing this international event, thank you to the jury for selecting the project, and thank you to the client for the great cooperation in the planning and construction process.
An open culture of communication enabled challenges to be identified at an early stage and solutions to be developed. A key concern of the client, the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Ried, was sustainable construction. In close consultation with all planners, a timber construction using local “BauBuche” wood was chosen to minimize the ecological footprint. The client’s involvement in the choice of materials and technical planning ensured an optimal balance between ecology, economy, and long-term operational efficiency.
The new Health & Education Campus in Ried sets an architectural milestone in sustainable construction and combines innovation with ecological responsibility. Nestled in extensive gardens, the building serves both hospital patients and students at the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions as a place of relaxation and learning. In addition to the campus premises, the new building also houses the hospital administration and impresses with its sustainable construction. The timber construction made of BauBuche in the supporting structure is complemented by a full-surface, pre-greyed fir façade. The innovative wooden façade with its irregular joint spacing and sophisticated color scheme in three different shades is particularly striking. The so-called chaos formwork—a varying arrangement of wooden boards in different widths and spacings—gives the building a dynamic, lively appearance.
