Architectural recognition for Delta Pods Architects: Security Center, Vienna
The construction of a security center at the site of the Meidling police barracks is intended to meet all service requirements in terms of both structural and technical infrastructure in a future-oriented manner. On the existing floor space of around 90,000 m², several organizational units are to be housed in building structures that are independent of each other, creating a central working environment for up to 4,000 employees with a net floor space of around 150,000 m².
Client: Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft. Special Real Estate Division, Vienna
Architecture: Delta Pods Architects with Dietrich | Untertrifaller
Competition: EU-wide, open, two-stage realization competition 2023, recognition
Usable floor space: approx. 150,000 m² NGF / for 4,000 employees
Capacity: offices, workshops, laboratories, IT center, visitor center, sports center with running track, sports field, gymnasium and swimming pool, canteen, hotel, kindergarten
Most of the space is reserved for office use, but laboratory space of various sizes is also needed. In addition, there will be space for an IT center with underground server space, a reception/visitor center, sports facilities (indoor swimming pool, running track, etc.), a deployment/gathering area, a cafeteria operation, and hotel-like accommodations for on-site staff. Furthermore, a helipad including refueling and underground parking for approx. 1,000 cars are planned.
The design blends in harmoniously with the surroundings and the listed buildings of the barracks. In contrast to the surrounding perimeter block development, the center of the site is freely arranged in cylindrical structures of different sizes.

The building heights respond to the adjacent, heterogeneous development. Low on the periphery, the cylinders rise from 22 meters to up to 35 meters in the interior of the quarter, giving the ensemble an exciting and varied silhouette with varying visual references.
The circular arrangement avoids undesirable vis-à-vis situations and at the same time creates varied, attractive open spaces. The compact building geometry reduces the degree of sealing to a minimum. The radial basic form also allows the use of serially prefabricated facade and ceiling elements. For safety reasons, the design of the facades does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the functions and uses behind them.
